Product Reviews

Glutathione supplements fall into three basic categories:

  • Cysteine donors. Availability of the amino acid cysteine can limit production of glutathione. Two supplements effective in making cysteine available for glutathione production are N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) and whey protein. It is generally thought that whey protein makes cysteine available as the dimer form of cysteine (called cystine) and perhaps another glutathione precursor, gamma-glutamyl-cysteine.
  • Metabolic support. The metabolism of glutathione involves not onlyproduction but also regulation and recycling. Supplements such asalpha lipoic acid (ALA), conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and seleniumare known to increase glutathione levels by supporting these other aspects of glutathione metabolism.
  • Direct delivery. Oral glutathione products are very common but available evidence suggests that this is one of the least effective methods of supplementation. Various delivery methods have been tried to improve effectiveness. Glutathione is available in IV form. There are also nasal and sublingual products. Liposome enclosed glutathione taken orally in liquid form is a promising idea but there isn't a great deal of evidence of its effectiveness.

Perhaps the best general purpose solution is to combine the use of a cysteine donor with supplements for metabolic support.
